Benazir Bhuto Killed!

The first female Prime Minister in the Muslim world, Benazir Bhutto was assassinated in a gun and bomb attack today in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. Bhutto was attending to a election rally there when the tragedy happens. Wasif Ali Khan a member of Pakistan's Peoples Party (PPP) said Bhutto died at 18.16 (13.16GMT) in Rawalpindi General Hospital. According to BBC news today at least 15 was also killed in the incident.

Democracy in Pakistan seems to be more in vain as how things happened now. By the way will the coming elections on January will still go on despite this tragedy. Is it a conspiracy? It seems that in the event of her assassination there was a bomb blasted nearby and Bhutto was killed by a gunshot on her head in news at Reuters today. Hmm.. it seems like the bomb blasted just to divert the attention and the killer seems to just shot Bhutto direct at her head. Any takers?

Kudos : Ang Lee's film sweeps Taiwan 'Oscars'!

Ang Lee did it again! This time in the Golden Horse awards in Taiwan with his film Caution. This movie is a war drama set in Japanese occupied Shanghai during World War 2 which narrates the fortunes of young woman (played by actress Tang Wei who also won a newcomer award)
embroiled in a plot to seduce an enemy collaborator.

Ang Lee won himself the Best director award and his film Caution won the the Best picture award. The hero of the film Tony Leung Chiu-wai won the Best Actor award too! The golden Horse Awards which is a annual affair here in Taiwan is also dubbed as the Chinese Language equivalent of the Academy Awards. The picture beside from BBC News shows Ang Lee with his two awards and actress Tang Wei with her award.

It is also worthwhile to mention here that Ang Lee is also the famous Taiwanese Oscar winner for the controversial film Brokeback Mountain (one of my favorite too!) which told us about the unorthodox complexity of a romantic and sexual relationship between two men in the American West from 1963 to 1983. Ang's other films includes Hulk and Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.

Kudos to you again Ang Lee!!

Les Bleus Vs The Azzuri : Euro 2008

Group of Death

Former champions Italy, France and Holland were drawn together with Romania the dark horse in the Group C of coming Euro 2008 will be held from 7th to 29th June in Austria and Switzerland. France and Italy were also both finalist for the Euro 2000 and World Cup 2006, France won the Euro 2000 and Italy is the reigning World Champions by beating France in a penalty shoot out in Germany last year.

The Rest of the Draw

This 13th edition of European Championship will kick off in Basel on June the 7th between Switzerland and Czech Republic in Group A which also consist Portugal and Turkey. In my opinion the Portuguese and Czech Republic should came out easily from this group to go to the last eight of the tournament. Greece the surprise winner of last edition Euro 2002 in drawn in Group D with Sweden, Spain and Russia. Spain and Sweden looks promising from here. In Group B there is the mighty Germans (3 times champions) with Austria the debutant, Poland and Croatia who dashed the English hopes in the qualifying round.

The Gala

The draw was held in Culture and Convention Centre in Lucerne earlier this evening. Being conducted by Swiss actress Melanie Winiger and Austrian television presenter Rainer Pariasek. The duo were joined on stage by representatives of the teams that have lifted the trophy previously: Valentin Ivanov (USSR, 1960), Luis Suárez (Spain, 1964), Dino Zoff (Italy, 1968), Franz Beckenbauer (West Germany, 1972), Anton Ondrus (Czechoslovakia, 1976), Bernard Dietz (West Germany, 1980), Michel Platini (France, 1984), Marco van Basten (Netherlands, 1988), Peter Schmeichel (Denmark, 1992), Jürgen Klinsmann (Germany, 1996), Didier Deschamps (France, 2000), and Theodoros Zagorakis (Greece, 2004).
